Is it possible to replace the shift cable boot without removing the gimbal ring? I am in the process of replacing this and it's very difficult to reach the boot hose clamp.

It looks like I need special tool to remove the gimbal ring which I don't have :(

u dont have to pull the ring.take off the drive and pull the cable out after disconnecting in engine compartment.u need a special socket for the cable.or u can make one out of a deep thin wall socket and weld a nut on top.its pretty clear cut in the manual or try this site http://www.mercstuff.com/shiftcable2.html.

No, you don't have to remove the gimbal ring or the bellhousing for that matter. Go to the link below and download manual #14 for your drive. Then look at section 4A, there are complete details on changing the cable and the shift cable bellows.
You will have to remove the cable and readjust after reinstalling the cable. So if it shows any signs of being stiff or rough spots in your cable, replace it while you have it out.

I got it done. However I couldt figure out the shift cable bushing. There was a plastic piece that came out of the bellhousing but my kit didn't have this. It just had a little rubber grommet with a lip so I put if it's place. It didn't really stay tho.

Thanks
