replaced waterpump impeller and lost reverse

i replaced the impeller in my 86 galaxy alpha one outdrive. i put it all back together and when i put it in drive it slid in just like it had before however when i went to put it into reverse i had none i was wondering if you could possible give me a pointer or two on fixing my error i probably didnt have it in forward gear when i droppped the lower gear housing

Does the control handle move freely back and forth? Do you have neutral? If yes, raise up the outdrive and look underneath to see if the intermediate shift is properly coupled to the upper shift shaft as in Ziggy's photo (post #14) http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?p=2764600#post2764600 If OK you may have to readjust your lower shift cable.

ok the neutral does work and forward gear works fine and i had it out on the water days before i swapped out the impeller and reverse worked good i will check out cables and such tomorrow appreciate the reply

The drive shift lever is probably not in the slot. Put in forward, and pull drive back about an inch. Make sure shift lever is pointing straight and turn prop shaft counter-clockwise to hold it in position.

thanks for the help guys im sure ill get it tomorrow this is all pretty new to me not used to things without tires
