Re: Replacemenr Gaskets
Hi: I am working on my first small outboard repair project need advice and wisdom about gasket repair/replacement. The engine is a 1954 Johnson 5.5 hp (model CD-10). Can I reuse gaskets if they are hard but not broken? Can I find replacement gaskets on the Internet? Does anyone have recommended sources? Can I make my own gaskets? Of what material? Should I use silicone or other sealant with new or used gaskets? Sorry for so many questions. Hope no one gets upset and blows a gasket! Sorry again! I really do appreciate the help. Thanks. Personally, I consider it poor practice to reuse gaskets, especially "hard" ones. Sure you can find them on the internet. A few of them maybe even here at iboats.
www.marineengine.com is a good source. And of course you can make your own if you are so inclined. Usually they are installed dry, but sometimes OMC Gasket Sealant is reccommended.
Here is the advice you didn't ask for: Get yourself a parts list for your motor. Then it is a piece of cake finding replacement parts when you ask for them by part number. You would be surprised at how much stuff is still available from an Evinrude dealer. But a lot of them won't take the time to look them up, or don't even have the parts books that old.
