Well the choke on my Mercarb isn't working. When I bought the boat the PO had zip tied the choke open. I rebuilt it due to stalling on take off in gear. Runs like a champ except getting it started for the first time and after letting it sit for a bit can be a pain.

Ive looked them up online and 80 bucks is a bit excessive. Any other cheaper sources, maybe an automotive version.

Also what do you guys use to adjust the idle needle? Its hard to get anything in there especially with that thermostat housing burning the crap outta you.

Do we get a serial number... So we can look it up, or do I just guess and let you hope it's the right one?

Gen II started in 1991, that gives me a 23 year window... Merc used about a dozen different carbies in that time....

sorry bout that brain fart

serial number is D710981 so it looks like I have a gen 1 motor? The carb is a 2bbl with the angled accelerator pump

Man the PO did a hackjob on this boat...Originally it it a 3.0, looks like he repowered with a gen 1 4.3 and threw a gen 2 outdrive on it...

The only one I'm coming up with is not sold separately from the carb... Best take the old one to a carbie shop and see if they can match it..

Seems odd, I know. You should try to figure out the Volvo parts lookup if you want your head to explode.

The equipment I operate and maintain for real money, are made by Perry-Slingsby and Shilling Robotics... I have been inside their manuals and drawings for the best part of 20 years... and they STILL do my head in!

Unfortunately, it looks that way.... Nobody said boating was cheap.. (certainly not me!)

Boat = Break Out Another Thousand...
or,
As much fun as standing in the shower tearing up $50 notes...

You might find a second hand one at a breakers yard... or eBay....

This one looks right,

http://www.ebay.com/itm/ROCHESTER-2-bbl-2GC-CARBURETOR-ELECTRIC-CHOKE-KIT-Convert-your-Hot-Air-Choke-/160832300136?hash=item25725a2468&item=160832300136&pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr#ht_724wt_698

I think, but am not sure, that a mercarb is a pretty darn close copy of a Rochetser 2G
FWIW that looks like it will fit my Mercarb on my 898

Since there's no moving parts therefor no sparks it should be ok for marine use, but.....
would a non marine coil effectively decertify a marine carb?

Re: Replacement Choke Coil for Mercarb

I just thought about something that may have happened. That choke coil has only one wire going to it so it has to ground through contact with the choke housing. Pull the choke coil off and see if the PO put a gasket under it. If he did, then you don't have a ground and it won't work.
You do know how to adjust the choke don't you? If the PO didn't want the choke, he may have just turned it so it won't work.

To test the current coil apply a test lead to choke terminal or plug it in and the other end to lead wire (purple) and a test lead wire to ground and the other end attached to the coil body it self (make sure it's touching metal of body) if it's good you will see it contract. Oh yea the key must be on it's a simple test . And also check what Don said along with making sure the tab on the coil itself is to the left of the choke arm inside housing so it will open the butterfly when it contracts.
