When I bought my 1994 Tracker Deep V 16 ft it had a Mercury Classic Fifty on it. I replaced the water pump impeller and it was ready for the water. The motor started good but the tachometer wouldn’t work as well as other electrical problems with the stereo. After the ignition switch fell apart and was replaced I traced the tach problem back to a burnt out rectifier. I replaced the rectifier with the replacement part number. The tach worked well but now I see the voltage at WOT 5500 RPM is at 16.1v. I searched the forums here looking for some guidance because I am worried about screwing up my new starting battery with overcharging. It seems to me from what I’ve read that the 16v isn’t that much of a problem as long as I keep my water levels in the battery topped off because these motors were designed with only a rectifier and not regulator. Am I reading things right or should I be looking at a rectifier regulator which would keep the charging voltage around 14.4 volts. Any recommendations would be appreciated, especially inexpensive replacement options as this project is getting way over budget.

The battery acts as the regulator on these old Mercs. As you said, it's OK as long as the battery is kept topped off.

I bought a rect/reg on Ebay for less than 20 bucks. Gotta install it. :blue:

If I were to buy a rectifier regulator, what would I be looking for. Will any of the hundreds available work or is there specifications I have to meet to ensure it works properly on my motor? Does it have to be for a Mercury outboard?
