Replacement Notebook PC Battery

The li-on battery in DW's HPg60 Notebook, lasted just barely past the warranty.

I can see replacements anywhere for $16 - $50 ( which is about what the great HP replacement costs). Ebay, Amazon, HP etc.

Anyone know if there is any differences for the prices and who sells a good replacement?

Price is not nearly as much of an object, as DW being happy with a charged battery (if you know what I mean )

I have bought several replacements off ebay over the years for various laptops I have had and always been happy with the results, whats nice is a lot of the companies actually have higher capacity batteries for less than the factory originals.

Looking today, I considered the higher capacity battery, which would be ideal, but for at least this model, they are physically larger. They are thick enough, so they protrude, that the notbook will not sit right, on a flat surface. (I already know this won't fly - if you know what i mean )

Ebay would work, buy my Paypal account is low, so I found 4400 mAh, off Amazon for $26.

The reviews for the "OEM" battery, are horrible and they are $110 - on sale!

I have the same laptop, had the same issue. I ended up buying one of the amazon batteries you are talking about; the first one I ordered physically didn't fit (latches weren't quite the same). I don't know if I got a bad part or if I ordered the wrong one; either way, I tried to file the latches down because I thought I could make it work and not have to mess with returning. Well the computer ended up not recognizing it so I screwed that one up. Tried again from amazon, taking great pains to cross-reference not only the computer model number but the hp P/N on the old battery, and that one fits/works perfect (had it 2 months).

So yes go for it on amazon but the descriptions are so involved that I would search by HP battery P/N. FYI, based on my experience this is the one that didn't work:

If figures. I ordered the first one. I was in such a hurry yesterday, I did not even have time to read the dismal reviews.

If it does not fit, or work perfect, back it goes.

I just bought one for a dell from batteries plus because I needed it quickly. They said you are more likely to have problems with the computer not recognizing the new battery if you buy an off brand one, but you should be able to change the BIOS, whatever that is, to make any of them work, assuming it fits.

Just a note about maintaining your batteries: the following steps will prevent damage to the battery and keep it from losing its "memory"
1) If you intend to run off of 110v, allow the battery to fully charge then remove it from the laptop until you are done using the laptop plugged in to an outlet.
2) When you start using the battery, keep using it until it is fully drained, then fully charge it all the way again. Otherwise, the battery can develop a memory for a smaller charging range, thus making that small range equal to its run time.

One of the main reasons batteries loose their run time is that people leave them plugged in the computer for years without exercising the range.

Has anyone tried to pull apart the old battery and see if just new cells can be found relatively cheaply. I've done this with many different kinds of battery packs and almost always find higher capacity cells, then just rebuild the pack at about a 1/10 the cost.

Have you checked with HP yet? I know they are running a recall on notebook batteries due to a malfunction. It only involves certain models but it sounds like you may have one of the defective ones

Battery snapped right in and appears to be holding a charge.

We'll see how long it lasts for $23. Maybe as long as the expensive ones.

FWIW, wife informed me that the notebook was a little over two years old - time flies.

Li-Ion batteries do not have the memory effect that Ni Cads have so most of what written here is not accurate. It is true that you don't want to leave a computer plugged in all the time since Li-Ion batteries that are constantly getting a charge lose their capacity. Has nothing to do with discharging them through their total range. In fact, you do not want to fully discharge Li-Ion batterries if you can help it.

Can you run the laptop without a battery in it? Would it be better to leave the battery in and occasionally unplug the 110v and run the batt till it gets low? The Mrs has a Dell that she virtually uses as a PC but no need to kill the batt prematurely.

My last acer laptop spent 99% of its time plugged in, with the battery in it, and since changing to a new acer laptop a few months ago, I just checked the old one yesterday and the battery is still showing 99% capacity, I have never had problms with the li-on batteries..but I do know that some have had problems.

The only way to know the capacity is to use the battery and time how long it discharges.

in reference to earlier post about rebuilding laptop batts. I use to work at a batteries plus and was a tech there. I rebuilt them before but only nicads and nickel metal hydride. lithium batts are diff and would be better off getting new batt pack. if you do try to rebuild yourself make sure you note configuration and don't hold your solder gun on cells to long otherwise you will ruin the new cells.
