I am considering replaceing the transum on my boat. Before I really get started on this project, I need to know how the transum is attached to the hull. I have looked at other boats as well as my own and can not find any hardware.

Re: Replacement of Transom

The transom is a laminated section of wood adhered to the hull with fiberglass and resin plastic.

To do it right the entire top half of the boat (or a large section thereof) is removed by locating and drilling out all the rivets, then lifted away.

Then with carefull operation of powertool cutter/grinder of your choice, the wood is cut away from the fiberglass body of the boat.

When all is cleared of the old wood then a new piece of layered plywood is again fiberglassed in place.

Then with some paint and reassembly it's good to go.

Some boats if having transom issues might also have floor, frame, or stringer wood problems too.
