Is this a good cable for my 501/DP-A drive? I am not 100% sure of the length but they all appear the same except for length. Anything else I need? My shift cable needs to be replaced because its hard.

You sure the cable's bad? Unhook it at both ends and try pull/push.Should move easy.
The cable should have some numbers stamped in it on one end.
It might be in inches or feet.
Too long isin't good. But better than being too short.

Ill go ahead and try unhooking it, and see. Its a bear to get it into gear, out of gear, forward or reverse. That is making me believe its the cable.

That would sure be easy to check.
Remove the back cover on the drive, disconnect the cable. Start the engine on muffs and turn the shift mechanism by hand and see if you really have to force it in or out of gear.
Stay out of the props, they will hurt you, or take them off.

Have never seen one hard to shift at the drive and still work on the water.

I just went through all this on my SX Drive and old Teleflex controller. The cables were "decent" but the controller was the culprit. I bought a new side mount controller and replaced both the shift cable and throttle cable. All Teleflex products. I bought the extreme cables. She is as smooth as butter now! I got it all done for less than $400.

As said before, make sure you keep your ends off the old cables. Pretty easy job and well worth doing it all.

I'm gonna dig into it tonight and I'll get back on the results.

Re: replacement shift cable

So it was definitely the cable. I pulled it out. Much easier to get it out with the top section of the out drive removed. I had to pull that anyways to replace the bellows.
