So this is my first post here - I have used the forums to trouble shoot a few problems on my boat in the past but this time I'm pretty much stuck.

Boat: 1982 Renken BR 19ft
Engine: 120h
Outdrive: no idea, some kind of sterndrive. :)

This is my first power boat, I picked it up for a good deal but it was more of a project boat. I have gotten it about 90% restored and have been enjoying the lake this summer but last weekend we were out with some friends and the boat wouldnt shift into drive (or reverse) I had a problem where it wouldnt shift into reverse last month but I adjusted the bracket the switch uses to engage and it worked fine next time out.

I looked at the sticky for the (how a Shift Interrupt system works) and I have a feeling thats what it is, The boat wont stall with muffs on running when I click the button on the little switch.

The problem I have is the pics and things I have seen show a style Shift Interrupt system that I dont have. here is a pic of the Shift Interrupt system on my boat.

I read something about the lower shift cable (the one coming out of the upper right of that pic - but I dont know if I have the expertise to repair that. Is there an easy way to trouble shoot this?

The main reason for the post is I cant find a part # on those switches so I have no idea what Im actually looking for :)

Thanks for your help -

Have a look here to ID your drive:

Do you get a thrill out of posting that mercstuff link or what. You post it on everything, even this OMC post.

You can look at that picture and tell it's not Mercruiser, it's an OMC stringer shift system.

Re: Replacement Shift Interrupt system

That is an OMC stringer mount drive, and shift system is TOTALLY different than a Mercruiser drive. And those switches were discontinued a long time ago. And you better hope its not the cable to the drive, as it alone is about $600, just for the part

600$ for a cable? holy cow.

So the switches are discontinued? I'm sure theres a conversion but what are we talking about here, how difficult is this going to be or should i just take it to a shop?

I'm pretty handy with engines and electrical but I have limited experience with boats :)

The original post said a 120 mercruiser with unknown sterndrive and no mention of OMC
only tried to help.

You have a 1982 2.5L OMC with a model 400 outdrive. I suggest you buy a factory OMC manual.

There were 3 model variations of the 2.5 in 1982
Yours will be one of these three - should be a tag on the motor to ID it

252FTHRCNC
252FTHRCNG
252STHRCNC

one of the switches is available from any dealer selling Evinrude parts in your town
0982886 SWITCH AND TERMINAL ASSY 1 $88.88

the other is NLA from Evinrude

0983103 CUTOUT & SWITCH ASSY 1 Legend Not Available

shop.evinrude.com has all the parts breakdowns online

Re: Replacement Shift Interrupt system - OMC stringer shift system

welp I dinked around with it alil this afternoon, I took the shift plate cover off to see the the lower shift cable was broken. It was not broken and seemed to move pretty easy. When I moved the cable all the way (top or bottom) the prop would start to click when I would turn it from outside the boat (engine off just had someone spinning he prop for me while I moved the cable)

Anyway it wouldnt ever lock up in gear, I dont know if the engine needs to be on or not to make that happen but it never went into gear.

Any other suggestions to trouble shoot whats going on?

Also another noob question, where would i find the numbers on the engine to figure out what book i need?
