Hello all,

I have a 1975 amf crestliner apollo 660. I need to know where I can purchase a replacement steering cable. It is mounted through the tilt tube. The steering helm looks like a pipe capped off on one end and the cable goes into the other end. Plus there is a coil spring/screw in the middle of it. Looks like a kind of pipe bomb. The cable end clips into the helm/pipe and is typical into the tilt tube. I have scoured the forums and West Marine (sucks).
My cable seized in the tilt tube so I cut it off (the cable). I finally got it out (lots of drilling and hammering with punch + WD40 + torch). Now I need a new cable.

Any help from the pros (you) would be much appreciated.

Thanks

You have what is called a "rack" system. Personally, I prefer the rotary type. They are smoother, in my opinion and take up a lot less room under the dash.

You can buy them (either) right here on iboats.

Just go to the Marine Store on the top of the page. Many to choose from, great prices. Use your old cable as a guide to determine length. I find it's easier to just buy the kit unless you know exactly what type of helm you have.

I just bought one. It got here in four days using standard shipping. I'd give them a few extra days because of Christmas.

I installed it today-easy.

Re: Replacement Steering Cable

Thanks DJ.

I will take a look. For some reason I thought Rack and Pinion was rectangular (the part the cable goes into, behind the helm).Mine is a round 2 inch thick tube.

Some are round pipes, some are square/rectangular. Both are rack and pinion, just different styles or brands.
