Hi all, need some help with this one:

On an '85 Merc 3.7 170, I've been having tachometer problems on and off for two years. A few months back, I replaced the ignition coil (wasn't reading proper voltage at the gauge) and more recently I replaced the tachometer (even with proper voltages, still no display) itself.

So, I ran the boat in the yard after I replaced the gauge and it worked great. I haven't run the boat in nearly a month and today when I started it up, I got nothing. The gauge reset from 800 to 0 when I turned the key on and it bounced around erratically while the motor warmed up, but then settled back on 0.

I broke out the multimeter and read 13-14v between ignition and ground poles on the gauge, and 7-8v between the ignition and signal poles while applying some throttle.

Any ideas?
