Even though this is a first time problem for me,I know others have had to replace their late model ford key that has the high tech chip in it.Whats the cheapest way to get a duplicate key without going to the stealership? Thanks

Re: Replacing a ford key

Have a hardware store make a new key from a regular blank, then cut your old key open, take the chip out and superglue it right next to the ignition cylinder as close as possible. Otherwise the new key has to be programmed anyway and the dealership is the only one who can do this. The other alternative, and you'll have to check your owners manual to verify this, is on some vehicles, if you have two working original keys, you can use them to program a third key. The specific procedure should be in your owners manual. If it isn't, then you're stuck with my first suggestion or going to the dealer.

I had the same problem, you can find a local locksmith to do it. I paid $45 and it including the programing. If you have two keys you can program a third on your own. You can get a Ford chip key blank on eBay from $7-$15 and then take it to a hardware store and have it cut. You can program it yourself, again, if you have two other keys (which I assume you don't). After getting the new key made, I found the set I lost doh!
