I have a 1964 Johnson 40 hp Electromatic shift outboard on a 1964 Niagara Custom MFG. I would like to replace it with a new outboard. Concerns are the electrical hookups from old to new and the steering cables that are currently using cable hookups to both sides of the outboard. I restored this boat in 2009 rebuilding the transom and steering among other things to get it in the water. The 40 hp continues to be a problem and I would like to replace it. I am looking for any suggestions or guidance adapting an old boat to a new outboard.

The changes needed to electrical and mechanical controls depend on what motor you plan to install. What kind of controls do you have now? 2 lever mechanical control box and ign key on the dashboard?

I presume your steering is cable and drum?

Newer OBs could be connected to the cable and drum steering, but there are advantages in the newer single push-pull steering.

Different year OBs have unique electrical connections.

The biggest hurdle is a going to be short shaft outboard which I know yours is. 25hp Suzuki I think is the biggest short shaft remote that is manufactured currently.. cable drum steering fits fine. I just put a 2021 DF25 on my 66 StarCraft Holiday 14. I removed a '66 mechanical shift Big Twin 40hp

A new motor would come with required electrical rigging.----Next to impossible to use 1964 ELECTRIC SHIFT wiring on anything made today !!
