Replacing bilge pump

Any advice on how to replace the pump? The old one is held in place with three of what look like stainless wood screws on a small rectangular raised portion in the bottom of the bilge. It looks like a 1x6 was secured to the bottom of the bilge, and painted (or glassed and painted) over, and then the old pump was screwed down to the 1x6. Am I guessing right, i.e., is this the customary way to secure the pump in the bilge? When I install the new one, do I need to take any precautions to keep water from seeping around the screws and into the wood (assuming that's what it is)? It's really hard to reach, too; I wish I had 5 foot arms with three elbows in each.

If this were mine, I would be using some 3M 4200 in the screw holes and around the screw threads when replacing the pump.

There isn't much else that you can do in this situation.

Happy boating!

5 FT. Arms with 3 elbows each? Well now you know why it's not cheap to take your boat a Marine Service Tech.

The platform is there for the bilge pump. It is just glassed in with no screws. You could put a dab of silicone or similar sealant on the holes before you secure the new pump, good idea to preserve the pad, but most mfgs. just screw it in.

Make sure you replace the original pump with one of similar or higher rating.

Brown is power and black is ground (best direct to battery for ground).

If replacing with automatic pump the brown goes where the old one went and red goes direct to battery through the proper rated fuse.

Replace your old pump with one from the same manufacturer. It will snap right into the original strainer. They are designed for this. Some manufacturers even use a strainer that is universal for all manufacturers.

I would have posted that but you beat me to it. BTW, I have done exactly that on my boat.

Thanks, All.

Incidentally, weeks ago I tried to find a similar or identical pump, to no avail.

Re: Replacing bilge pump

I replaced mine.....same setup with a glassed-in piece of wood. My feet/legs were straight up in the air...my weight was supported by one arm, I had to use a Dremel to pre-drill the holes (a right-angle drill would be nice); was a real pain. I used a very common brand, so if it ever broke again, I could snap-in a new pump.
I would use 5200 or 4200 sealant for screws.
Or....a cheasy way to do it would be to mount a pump on a thick aluminum plate, and just place it down in the bilge.......I don't like that approach, though.

Interesting! Great advice because I want to replace my rule 500 GPH non automatic with a automatic. I wonder if the wiring on that will change though? My pumps only two years old.

You may not be able to go from a non-auto to an auto. I would just put in an automatic switch if the pump you have now is working.
