I have a broken powershift 2 remote control for my 74 Johnson 50hp outboard. I was wondering if it is possible to replace my old shifter with a Johnson or Evinrude two handle shifter (shipmaster or simplex). My wires to the powershift no longer have the red connectors (long replaced by former owners by wire splices). So would wiring a toggle switch for choke and a keyed switch for starter work as a replacement?

Re: replacing control box

It should work as long as the shift and throttle cable throws are the same.

I prefer two levers to one anyway. Easier to adjust :)

Re: replacing control box

Not sure how to measure the throws...any suggestions. These are all pretty common controls, i'm hoping someone who has done a conversion will chime in and let me know how it works. I like the idea of split gas and gear shifting and the ease of adjustability. Anyone have any input on how i can duplicate the warm up lever effect by using the two stick control, or is that a feature i just lose?

Re: replacing control box

When the two handle control is in neutral the throttle lever will act as the warmup lever. You must pull the throttle lever all the way back any time you want to change gears. So if you are going full throttle in forward you will have to pull the throttle lever all the way back and then change gears. You can move the ignition switch from the mono-lever control to the dashboard or console. Remember to bypass/remove the neutral safety switch that is in old control (if it has one).
