Hi-

I have a 1986 Lund 17' Tyee with a 80's model 90 HP Evinrude. The steering is very stiff and have been told I just need to replace the cables. I have never done this so just need a little help! It is a Detmar 14' cable Rack and Pinion Steering. From what I have read online, Detmar is no longer in business. I seen there is Teleflex and Uflex brands. Are there any kits that I can buy that will be direct replacement? Do I have to pull the steering wheel? Does cable unhook easily from motor end? Any tips would be great!

First off, you need to do your research on the Teleflex and Uflex websites as far as direct replacements for yours, but I'm betting they don't have anything. I went through this when I rebuilt my Checkmate and found that manufacturers are more interested in selling entire systems rather than cables. If you do a lot of searching and get very very lucky you might come up with someone who happens to have an unopened cable sitting on a shelf in a dusty backroom. Other than that you're more than likely going to have to replace the entire helm.

As far as getting the cable off the engine, in theory it's not difficult. What can turn it into an adventure is removing the large retaining nut if it was installed without anti-seize. It wouldn't be a bad idea to start soaking it with WD-40 or something similar.

what do you mean by helm? Like I mentioned previously, I have never replaced one so I have no idea!

Simple explanation, that's the entire steering system comprised of the rack and pinion part under the dash as well as the part that connects to the dash up to what the steering wheel connects to.
