Replacing driveshaft in 99 Yamaha F100, will I have to reshim?

When I replace the driveshaft (pinion, not prop shaft) in my lower unit do I need to reshim the shaft or can I just put it back together with the existing shims? It has about 500 hours and should be in great shape internally. I have to replace because of oil pump spline damage on the powerhead side. I don't plan on replacing any bearings or gears. Can you usually get away with just replacing the shaft with the existing shims? If not how do you go about shimming it? My manual is somewhat lacking in explaning it.

It is my understanding that the shafts are controlled tolerances, but the castings of lower unit can be different.
Long as you have same casting and no damage then old shims will be fine.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge will chime in to make sure

I hope you're right. The local shop charges $110/hr and I can't be sure if they will just swap out the shaft or reshim. I'd rather put the money into special tools than labor.
