Can I replace the exhaust bellows without removing the outdrive? 1986 Sea Ray Seville 19' BR.

Others may weigh in, but I think you can with an exhaust tube, don't think you can do both ends of a bellows though. Good luck.

OK, just to be sure -- I can just replace the bellows with an exhaust tube without removing the drive?

Great. Thanks for the help. If the drive was not already off, why would anyone choose to replace with another bellows instead of the tube?

it is a little more noise, now the amount of extra noise seems to bother some and be non-detectable to others according to the posts I reviewed when I did mine. I put the bellows on, but had to do all of them anyway. Tube is easier. Good luck.

I am finally getting around to doing this. The guy at the shop is telling me that I can't use the tube (784-58A1) with my 470. He says they are only for 454 motors. Anyone know why this guy would be saying that?

Because the tubes were intended for big-block engines to reduce backpressure that results from routing the exhaust through the drive. And since the 470 didnt come from the factory with a tube, it came with a bellows, thats how they want to repair it. Because sooner or later someone is going to get water up their exhaust and into the engine, and blame it on the non-standard use of the tube. As professionals, they dont want to take that risk.

My local marina, however, told me they use exhaust tubes on all their jobs, regardless of engine, and will only use an exhaust bellows if the customer specifically requests it, because it saves them the time and works fine 99% of the time.

By the way, dropping the whole outdrive just takes a couple of minutes. That's the easiest way to get to the bellows for replacement.

Yeah Bamaman1, I forgot to mention that the drive is off and bell housing removed also. I am changing all bellows at once now. You are right about the time. I was very nervous to take it off, but it only took 10 minutes taking my time.

Same with the motor. I was very anxious about possibly removing it, but just finished the new transom and removing and installing the engine was certainly not the hardest part of the project.
