Hi All,

I'm getting the milky oil in a 25hp mariner (serial: 0b 253 045) gearbox and hoping to get some advice on how to actually remove the gear-linkage and the drive shaft seals; as well as the prop seals?

I've uploaded some pics showing the leg removed etc but need some guidance. I've removed the pump etc which seemed pretty straight forward and hoping there isn't any specialized tools required.

Any help appreciated!! :)

PS: I haven't taken a pic of the actual drive shaft seal (forgot to).

Download THIS manual. It is for later engines, but the gearcase is the same.... Password for the file is <<ribforum>> You'll find detailed procedures.

Gee, thanks heaps for that Chris, I really appreciate it!! :D

I had a look through and it seems one does need a few special tools to complete the job. It may have to go into the shop, although I do know a mechanic who could work his way through it, but I don't think he has those tools as well! Doh!

thanks - Lyall :)

I've done the job just recently and don't recall having to use any special tools. The only 'trick' is the bearing carrier... Take the prop forward thrust washer off, flick the SS cover off it and put it back on the shaft the other way.... That's what you use to unscrew the carrier... After that, it's normal tools. If you're replacing bearings and re-shimming, then you need more special tools.
