To repair my reverse my yamaha certified mechanic says to replace the whole gear set at the same time...reverse and forward gear so they wear together. i know with a lot of things with gears thats important....but the forward and reverse gear dont even mesh with each other...right? they mesh with the drive gear and clutch. so will i be alright just replacing reverse gear?

Re: Replacing gears in lower unit

yes its an acceptable practice to change the reverse gear by itself, not acceptable to replace just the fwd gear.
best way is by measuring old revese gear backlash and reshim the new gear and bearing,if applicable, to the old gears lash. but pinion and fwd gears should be changed together as fwd takes most the load.
look on your techs wall for drivetrain certificates.
