I have a 115 evinrude. I hit a rock & broke a hole in the gear case. I have another solid case that has some shifting problems. I'd like to switch gears from one to the other.

Can this be done without the special tools in the manual? They show a pair of truarc pliers and a special puller.

Thanks in advance,

Greg Hodges

Fivestar..... You could rig up a hook like device with a slide hammer tool which to yank the carrier assy out of the lower unit. However, the large truarc pliers are a must in order to remove and install the two retaining snap rings. I bought my last pair from "Matco Tools". I don't remember the price except that I do remember that the price was reasonable.

fivestar , Joe reeves is right . You'll definately need snap ring pliers. You can use a three jaw puller with reversible jaws to remove carrier.Select one with long thin jaws.May have to do some undercut filing on hook end of jaws as the surface edge you'll be gripping is less than 1/4".Also, puller will have to have long enough jack bolt to center on prop shaft and allow jaws to reach carrier lip.Be sure to remove carrier retainer bolts. You will need long 3/8 extension with socket to reach bolts.
