Pulled my lower unit tonight to install a new impeller kit. I was afraid I had toated it by running it with the engine out of the water. Here's the thread: http://forums.iboats.com/bbBoard.cgi?a=viewthread;fid=24;gtid=1179870;gpid=1180384#

I took some pics, cause I thought it might be interesting to those that assured me my impeller would be fried.

This first pic is after I pulled the lower unit. Only thing I had to sit it on that would support it was my motorcycle lift. Turns out, it worked pretty well.

This pic is of the old impeller, wear plate, and housing on the left, and the new on the right. Note the shape of the old impeller, wear plate, and housing. There are some wear marks, when I pulled it out there was some sand in the area. I expect this is what caused the wear marks. This is the original impeller, from '99. I guess I dodged the bullet on this one.

Not sure if you can see it in this pic, but I snipped the heads off 2 metric screws that I used for guide pins to keep the gaskets and plate and housing in line. I also was able to put a 2x4 under the bottom of the skag that lifted the prop up enough so I could freely turn the drive shaft to get the housing on over the impeller.

It started raining tonight, so I'm going to wait to finish it tomorrow or sat, depending on the weather.

Also, wanted to say thanks for the help provided earlier. 8)

Re: Replacing impeller

Definitely not as bad as it could have been. Guess that Gen II design with the bigger metal housing dissipates heat better than the old plastic ones did. Once the impeller blades take that curved shape set you see on the old one & start to harden up, the pump efficiency is reduced considerably. That's why impeller should be changed every 2 yrs or so. Good luck getting her back together - looks like you have it under control.

:) make SURE you get the quad-ring back in right

its really better to pull the whole drive as you can then pressure check for leaks and its a LOT more easy to line up the water tube and all the other parts on a bench

And the slinger ring will fail before the pump

Tommays,
What do you mean "quad-ring" and the "slinger ring"? Cant find this on the parts diagram.

Re: Replacing impeller

The "Quad Ring" is like an oring only if you cut it, the cross section of the rubber is square aka quad. (It's the ring laying on the penny in toms picturs)
It's the gasket that goes between the upper and lower units and circles the oil passage.

The slinger ring is the ring in toms picture that has the quarter in it. It goes on the vertical shaft and touches the top of the pump housing. With a merc pump kit, there is a tool for installing the ring to prevent it from being pushed too tight or too loose where it contacts the pump housing.

Re: Replacing impeller

Thanks Don S. I kinda figured the quad-ring was that particular o-ring. There's no particular way it goes on is there? Got it now what the slinger ring is. My old seal looked pretty good.

Thanks again for the help. 8)
