Re: Replacing Impellor
I would first get the new water pump kit. It makes it easy to see what parts need replacement, however not all parts in the kit may be used because the kit could fit a multiple of engines.

Remove the lower unit and support by the skeg in a vice with protective jaws. The water pump slides off the drive shaft after the removal of usually 3 bolts and a nut. Note the direction the impeller vanes are facing upon removal. Install necessary parts.

When reinstalling the l. u. many people have problems with lining up the shift shaft. If you take off the lower unit in neutral you should not have to worry, but try with light pressure to turn the shift shaft both directions if it moves more than a quarter turn you need to rock the cam back into the neutral position with a 5/16 - 12 pt. comb. wrench on the shaft. You should feel light resistance then a click; that will be neutral. If you keep going you will feel light resistance again, then a click; that is reverse. Keep going still and the cam will disengage the clutch push pin and the shaft will spin freely back to forward.
