I have a 1996 Offshore Yachts 18 foot center console boat. My current motor is a Suzuki DT140. What would be a good size replacement motor for this size boat? I think the 140 is a bit much, I only go out with my wife and 2 dogs. Saltwater use,
Thanks-I only use it for swimming and fishing-speed is not a factor.

You have a lot to consider before you make a decision. What is your boat rated for ? how does it perform at present ? how do you want it to perform ? could you get what you need by adding a "kicker" motor. I would be very careful about giving up available power, especially if the weather turns nasty while you are out there.

Re: replacing motor

Well, the first consideration is what the manufacturer rated the boat for. Many 18 CCs are rated for 150hp.

My experience has been that most boats will perform at about 90% of top speed (with rated power) using 70% of rated power. Example: My Boston Whaler Sakonnet 16 would reach 39mph with a 70hp Evinrude and 43mph with the top rated 100hp Evinrude.

The 70 burned about 50% of the fuel that the 100 used. Much of that difference was engine design, but the lighter weight was also a major contributor.

So, if your boat is actually rated for 150hp you can get satisfactory performance, improved handling, agility and fuel efficiency at the sacrifice of a few mph in top speed using a 115 carbed 2 stroke.

If that 115 is an EFI 4 stroke, DFI 2 stroke or an ETEC the fuel savings will be much greater but because of the weight the loss of top speed would be slightly greater.

Good luck. :)

Re: replacing motor

The way it is now I can get about 40mph out of it with no waves or chop. But this boat becomes a rough ride when the waves pick up. I think I will keep my eye out for a newer used 115HP. I'm mostly sticking to the intercoastal or not far from shore.
Thanks

If you do make the change to a 115hp please post your results for us all to see.
Good Luck.
