I have a 17 foot Nitro boat and I am thinking of replacing the carpet. I would like to get your opinion on whether I should do it myself or take it somewhere and have it done. If I can do it my self what would be the best way to go about it ?

Thank you in advance for you help..

Eli

Re: Replacing my Boat's Carpet..

You're going to get a LOT of opinions here on this subject. :)

I'm no expert; I don't even play one on T.V. but...

I replaced the carpeting in my old (1979) Wellcraft Cuddy with regular ol' indoor/outdoor carpet from Home Depot. I used the mastic compound from Home Depot that said it was to be used on wood or concrete.

I did that over a year ago and the carpet has held up remarkably. I figured that as inexpensive as the project was I would just replace the carpeting every couple of years or so but it's holding up very well indeed. It even spent a few days last year under a considerable mound of ice and snow.

You can check out the rest of the pictures by clicking on the Snailman link just above the U.S.P.S. logo at the bottom of my reply.

Sorry........I forgot to tell you where I got the heavy paper. It came from a sign shop. They use it to make patterns. The stuff comes in several widths (36"-60"), plus it was cheap!

Re: Replacing my Boat's Carpet..

Johnny,Thanks for the information on your experience with this project. I just figured that winter is going to be the best time to do this project. The main reason I am replacing my carpet is because the Nitro I bought was a Bank Repo so the carpet was showing some sun damage. I am currently looking to also replace the original seats on the boat. Does anyone have an Idea where I can find them. I am going to contact Nitro tomorrow to see what I can find. Thanks again guys for you help on this... :)

Thanks for the compliments on the work and the photos. I need to update that page a little. Hopefully in the spring I'll have lotsa nice new stuff to post.

Fitz.... Thanks! I think I got the satelite image from Terraserver but I might've gone through Mapquest to get there. I know I didn't pay for it. I think I probably blew it up in Photoshop and added text with Photoshop.

Re: Replacing my Boat's Carpet..

I recarpeted my 1986 Larson bowrider with the help of my brother. I also replaced the floor at the same time. It took an afternoon and maybe a couple of hours the next day to reload the boat and touch up where the glue didn't hold.

In the bow area, the carpet would be prone to unraveling, so my mom went to the craft store and bought these strips rubberized plastic and just sewed them over the edges. Worked great.

This was not a really tough project on my boat. A bass boat may be different. I bought marine carpet at Farm and Fleet for I think it was just over $80. I will say that I tried to use a spray can type adhesive and it didn't work very well. No big deal to apply new glue with a trowel. I would say this; for a hundred bucks and a couple of hours you will probably know how it is going to work or not work. :p

Good Luck and Merry Christmas :)

Pointer, did your mother use a household sewing machine on the plastic banding?

Yes, The carpeting was not dense enough to create a problem. I think she said it took less than one hour to do the job.

To that end my mom has spent the last 25 years repairing canvas and making tops for our families boats, but she doesn't have any special equipment. Just a singer sewing machine! ;)

Good Luck
