maybe i'm dense (thats what my wife says anyway)but i cannot figure out how to respool a new starter pull cord on my 88 model 6 hp johnson. i have tried to just rewind it so to speak but it only goes a few turns and stops. whats the trick to this? am i missing something or am i really dense because it doesn't look like it should be a difficult job  . thanks in advance

If it's anything like my 77 9.9, basically you just carefully separate the plastic spool from the spring and seat. Make sure the spring is unwound first. Underneath are 4 bolts, and then you'll see how to take out the old cord.

These rewind starters are a pain brokeboater.

Take the rope off the spool. Now what you gotta' do is turn the the starter counter clockwise about 16-17 turns. If you look in the top of the starter, you will see a slot for a large screw driver. Hold on to it or it'll slip out. Once you get the number of turns, take a pair of pliers and slip it under the pinion gear and let the gear jam against the pliers so the spool don't unwind. Now tie your rope to the spool. Hold the rope and remove the pliers and let the spool take up the rope as it unwinds.

Good Luck!!!!

Re: replacing pull cord on 6 hp

got er done. i do have a couple more kinda stupid questions. i bought this motor at a yard sale (20 bucks)so i do not have any type of manual yet.
got it started today and it runs out pretty good. what is the knob at the end of the tiller handle for? not the emerg shutoff, but right behind. also what is the deal with the choke? seems to work like some kinda pump. is there some way to shut it off beside pulling the emerg stop lanyard? thanks as always

The choke is used mainly at startup when cold. It'll richen the fuel/air mixture and provide an easier start. Basically it 'chokes' off the air more.

For instance when I start mine up I have the choke all the way out and pull the cord until I hear the motor burp. Next pull I push the choke back in, give it a tad more gas and it fires right up.

Oh, and I speak for everyone else on here...$20?? :D

Boy! I'll sure agree with that $20 surprise. I go to lots of garage sales and see lots of old outboards at them. I've never seen one that might run for $20, though. Guess I'll have to keep watching.
