Can anyone tell me the proper procedure for replacing the pull rope on a 1966 Johnson 9.5 hp outboard motor? The Model # is MO-12A. I attempted to replace it myself already and wound up damaging the coil spring assembly which causes it to rewind after being pulled. Now that I've spent $65.00 + on replacement parts I want to do it right. No one locally wants to work on one this old. Please give detailed instructions for dummies!! Thanks

Howdy, JPO.

Working on a recoil starter is VERY hazardous. Please don't attempt it until you have a manual with pictures to guide you. Wear heavy gloves and safety goggles.

Good luck! :)

Thanks JB:
I'm not disagreeing w/ you by any means, however it doesn't look to be that hazardous. I got the rope wound around the spiraled pully fine w/out tension on it, and with spring tension on it w/ little trouble. The problem was that I never could get it to retract the rope again on it's own. I eventually wound it up too tight and twisted up the recoil spring within the assembly. I talked to the local marine shop and got some "confusing/muddled" directions. It doesn't look to be that difficult to do, I just was hoping someone had a simple secret to doing it!

Thanks
