1978 mercruiser gm 153 ci 120 hp= I am pulling the motor because the coupler went out due to poor alignment and since ill have the engine out might as well replace the seal. The shop manual i have states how to replace it with the engine apart, is it possible to replace the rear main oil seal without doing a major overhaul like the manual states?

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... You'll have to flip it over, pull the oil pan, 'n the rear main to change both halves of the seal,.....

Personally, if it ain't leakin', nor showin' signs of leakin',....
Leave it Alone,..... ;)

They rarely go, unless from another issue,....
