Got a new rectifier from marine parts store . They gave me a 4 wire rectifier and I had mine with me which is a 3 wire . The new one has 3 yellow wires and one red . The old one had 2 yellow wires and one red . They said I could just put 2 yellow wires together and hook it up the way it was . Also the sierra part came with instructions which said yellow wires are interchangeable. Just asking if any one else has had this . Thanks

3 yellows are for 3 phase ac rectification to DC if you had a 3 wires rectifier it is a plain full wave rectifier and those are dirt cheap on amazon

I understand what your saying but I don’t want to have to return the one I have if it will still work . I will look at the cheaper ones next time . I was just wondering if I can still use the 4 wire one . Thanks

never tried it but I do not see why it would not work and no harm should come since ac rectification will still proceed in 2 of 3 internal diodes. it is all a matter of design and capacity . the normally shared load of 3 diodes may... impose a bigger load on 2 of the 3 diodes. hard to say

the little square rectifiers could certainly handle the load if heatsinked/mounted properly. I have even used those to merge brake & turn lights to a single wire to feed to trailer lights .

if you are not up the creek waiting for the parts may as well try to get the proper rectifier as per oldboat1's suggestion .

p.s. I assume this is just a rectifier.....not a regulator.... engine year not specified

Return it and get the 3-wire model

Thanks for your reply , after much research the 4th wire will be just extra will work fine . It is a rectifier for a Evinrude 60 hp 1986 model E60elcds .

If you must use it just ignore and insulate one of the yellow wires on the rectifier
Connect your two yellows to the remaining two yellows of the rectifier

(The 3 wire rectifier actually has 4 diodes in it and the 4 wire one has 6 diodes in it
You will be using just 4 of the 6 }
