My mechanic is telling me the reeds are shot in my '85 Merc 115 2 stroke. (S/N 0A154823). Does the crankshaft have to be removed to do this job or can the reeds be replaced by leaving the reed block on the crank?

stock Reed valves seldom go bad. Is the mechanic real sure? Bad reeds would affect idle quality.
Unfortunately, you must pull the powerhead and open the crankcase to even see them.

Labyrinth seals are more of a problem than reeds on inlines. Reeds seldom go bad.

Yep. Got to break her open.

What is wrong with your motor that led you to take it to the mechanic int he first place?

Loss of power under a load. Runs but only gets to about 2200-2300 RPMs and 10 MPH. Changed
the stator, trigger, switch boxes,,rectifier, new tank, gas, rebuilt carbs and fuel pump and added water fuel separator.

Have you checked spark and compression?

This sounds too much like he's clutching at straws (or milking the cash-cow). Silly question.. is the timing advancing properly?

YIKES. your mechanic has NO clue what he is doing. If he replaced all that. the motor should run great. I can't imagine what that cost you, but I bet it was more, the motor is worth. Sorry for your loss.

compression is good. Mechanic is a friend and not charging me. I think it was more like me grabbing at straws trying to fix it before summer was gone.

Have you checked to see if exhaust is plugged with carbon or insect nest?

Your reeds didnt go bad on one trip out. You could have some crap plugging a jet up. Gas sits in a tank for a long time and builds up varnish. You go riding around and the varnish breaks loose and plugs a jet or two. First check the compression and see if you have spark . Then flush the tank, change the lines, clean the carbs.

Raped Date? Might want to check that expression. I suppose a raped date would run faster than a raped ape.

All the parts on motor that was replaced where they new or used as it sounds like it only runnig on 3 cylinders, could be pack or stator

What's the number one clue a boat "mechanic" doesn't know wtf they are talking about? They blame the motors problems on reeds.
