I am ready to put fresh seals in the gear case, drive shaft and propeller shaft.

The seals that came with the Serra kit are about 1/2 the thickness of the original seals.

Then I saw a video that showed 2 seals used in one seat, back to back. hmmmmmm The kit did not include that many seals.

Anyway, should I just chuck these and get oem cause these seem really dinky.

If these dinky seals are designed to do the job do they go all the way in, open side down with the steel part exposed or the other way around.

This way?

That way?

Or the highway?

Thanks

Hate to say it but I've always used OEM Parts.

As a rule of thumb, the little spring in the seal goes toward what you are trying to keep in or out.
Example, if you are trying to keep oil in the spring goes towards the oil.
If you have two seals back to back, the springs are oposite each other, one towards the oil and the other towards the water.
Does that make any sense?

Yeah that's clear and it makes sense.
Trouble is the seals are not as robust as the OEM and I only have one for the drive and one for the prop shaft so there will be no back to back anything.
I think I will be giving Les a call in the morning for the real deal.
The other parts like the O rings and washers look ok and I have a fresh shift bushing but these seals are very important.
Without being sure I would say the ratio of water to oil in the lower unit is fairly low!
For a lousy 25 dollars I want these to be good, especially since I screwed up the prop shaft carrier and had to buy another.
Anyway I have to run up to the river to pick up a nuther can of gear oil since the first one has water in it.
Thanks.
