Replacing stator and rectifier question

OK, I posted previously that my volt gauge is reading 12 to 12.2 volts. I looked at my diagram fro my 69' Merc 800 and it shows three wires going to the rectifier. Two from the stator and one positive cable in the middle. I look at my rectifier and I have four wires going to it. Is one of those running to the volt meter. Also, at least according to the wiring diagram, it doesn't matter what way the wires from the stator hook-up tot he rectifier. Is this correct? I have another rectifier that I want to try out, I just want to make sure that the original is hooked-up correctly. Last year, when I had the boat out, it was charging. Also, how difficult is it to change out a stator on one of these engines? Thanks all for any info.

Re: Replacing stator and rectifier question

Kozman01, if that fourth wire is comming from the AC pole of the rectifier, it is used to operate the tachometer. Also, stator wires may be hooked up to either AC rectifier post.

To replace the rectifier, I would buy a full wave rectifier from Radio Shack. They have a 25 Amp model the size of a small post-it stack for maybe $5. You will need to ground the minus connection to your motor's case, and connect the two AC connections to the stator, and the plus connection to the red battery cable.

To replace the stator, you'll need to pull the flywheel... You'll need a flywheel puller to do that... After that it's a piece of cake...But not exactly a cheap part...

That's like an 80 dollar tool to do that isn't it? The flywheel tool that is. Is it just as easy to replace the flywheel to it's original position once it has been removed? Thanks on the Radio Shack tip.

Re: Replacing stator and rectifier question

You should have a key on the flywheel that positions it in the proper position.... So, yes....
