I have a new (to me) 1972 Evinrude 9.5, Model 9222.

The steering friction adjustment pads are worn, one fell out in pieces, needing replcing. I was able to get two new pads at a local dealer.

These pads are washers, 3/4" in diameter with a 1/4" hole, made from a brake-pad type of material. The steering friction adjustment screw runs down through these pads and the pads are located on either side of a curved, slotted bar with a metal washer behind each pad for stability. Tightening the steering friction adjustment screw causes these pads to apply pressure to the curved, slotted bar creating friction to retard the side-to-side movement of the motor, similar to brake pads.

It appears, from the parts manual, that I can remove the steering friction adjustment screw from the top and replace the pads using long tweezers.

Anyone have first-hand experience replacing these pads? I would appreciate the benefit of your experience.

Thanks,
