I have a 1987 Bayliner with a 5.0 litre omc motor and omc cobra outdrive. I tried to remove the thermostat to winterize the motor and could not get the thermostat out. There appears to be a snap ring holding it in place. I don't see any holes or groves in the ring to remove it, do I need to take it to the mechanic or am I missing something?

It's not really a snap ring per say but more like a big rubber O ring that holds the t-stat in place, you can use a small screwdriver to pry it out, you need to get a new t-stat, a gasket (which comes with sticky stuff on one side) and the rubber ring.

See this link, you want items 25, 52 and 56

It's a rubber O ring. Probably encrusted in corrosion.HERE is your breakdown.

Thanks, I would have never guess it was a rubber o-ring. I got it out no problem
