Greetings. Need some questions answered please.

I own a 1982 Bayliner Contessa Flybridge / 454 mercruiser with a 280 Penta Outdrive with a bad upper trans. I have a spare that I would like to swap with it. Both uppers are a 1.6 ratio. My questions are...

#1 When installing the new upper; will the shims that are curently in the outdrive now be ok or will I have to "re-shim" for the the new one?

#2 When I drained the oil there was fine metal shavings in the oil. Is this typical when the upper transmission fails due to the cone clutches failing, bad bearings or gear lash incorrect?

#3 Where can I pick up a pressure tester after I have resealed the outdrive?

#4 Anything else I should be looking for while the upper is off?

I will be replacing the bellows, u joints, checking the gimball bearing and replacing the seal also.

Thank you in advance for your input. T

You will have to reshim.

No, it is not typical. You probably have bearing and gear damage in the lower also.

#3 Where can I pick up a pressure tester after I have resealed the outdrive?

Look in the Adults Only sticky under home made tools.

#4 Anything else I should be looking for while the upper is off?

Every thing in the vicinity you can't normally see.
