need some help with instructions on how to replace water pump. replaced the impeller myself about 4 years ago and ran into some trouble. The instructions I had said to place throttle in frwd before removing lower unit. Which I did. I replaced everything and put the lower unit back on. When I hit the water, frwd ended up going in reverse. I was baffled and had to take to a mechanic to fix.

Question: is it necessary to put throttle in frwd? If so, what did i do wrong to cause things being reversed? How do I avoid again?

Thanks as I am going to give this a try one more time.

Just a guess - instructions should have read ".... put gearshift in forward." That's usually to provide access to disconnect the shift shaft. If you have a remote, putting the throttle in forward will (should?) put the gearshift in forward. I always find it easier to disconnect the shifter cable at the motor, then use the shifter handle on the motor to get the shift shaft in position for an easy disconnect (I do have a different motor, so setup may be different).

Anyways, appears you gear box and shifter were out of sync. If the shifter is in forward, make sure your gear box is also in forward. While the LU is off, turn the drive shaft clockwise - if the prop turns clockwise your gear box is in forward. If prop doesn't turn, gear box is in neutral. If prop turns counter clockwise, gear box is in reverse.

My preference with outboards is to leave the control in neutral. The rational is that although the upper shift shaft can only be in one place for each gear and neutral, the shift shaft in the gearbox can be in almost any location for froward (except the single locations for reverse and neutral). Leave it in neutral and make sure it's still in neutral when you go to refit and things should go a lot easier. If it does get bumped out of neutral while you're working on it, no big deal, just turn the shift shaft until it's back where it should be (neutral)...
