Just would like to know why so many people asking for help never followup and let us know how it turned out. Also why do so many people never express their thanks . Just wondering . Do others feel the same? nevjb

Re: replies to questions.

Thats the nature of the game.Generally thanks
are not forthcoming.I think
sometimes people ask a question and dont come back for the answer.

Re: replies to questions.

It would be nice to know if you helped someone or not. But, that's the way it goes.

Re: replies to questions.

I'm an ignorant newbe who has asked for help (and gotten it), I know how valuable you guys are. I try to always say thanks. But..., I may have forgot sometime. I also reply back with the results, if I dom't botch it and I'm just too red faced to take up more space. In the case of my water pump kit install, I'm schooled and ready but haven't done it yet (next week). i bet by the time it's done, my posts will be deep in the archives.
Sometimes you big dogs are intemidating and us lil pups feel like we're prattling on and cloging up a very busy forum.
.
On behalf of all of us who have had a lifeline thrown to us here, let me say .. Thank You!!

Re: replies to questions.

Never feel intimidated, Ted. Every "big dog" was a "pup" once.

When I started there were a lot of folks who helped me and answered all my (dumb) questions. Any tid bit I can pass on is simply a small pay back to those folks.

Besides, when someone asks what to do about the bolt he broke or the piece he lost or how to fix it -- the "expertise" to answer it came from a guy who'd "been there, done that"! A guy once asked me what I thought about putting V4 on a 13' boat he had. I told him "it'd be fun but a tad scary with XX prop and real scary with YY prop -- dont ask me how I know."

As for the follow up deal -- yes its always nice to hear the outcome. We all have a lot to learn and its nice to know what helps and what doesnt. For the past 25 years or so my job has included helping people work thru motor and set up problems, mostly via phone. I can only remember a very few who called back and said it was fixed. We have a saying that when you quit hearing from someone, its fixed -- the ol "no news is good news" thing. Sad but thats the way it is. A lot of people here do write back and let everyone know the outcome. Like I said, thats how we all learn, not just the person living the delima.

Good luck all!

Re: replies to questions.

I have come to learn that free advice is just that-free. Much of it given here also happens to be excellent advice.

I have also learned not to expect thanks for ANYTHING. I have sent free parts, materials, etc. to fellow members only to never hear from them again. That's societal, not just this, or any other internet board.

The internet, to some extent, has created a bunch of "shut ins" that will say anything, to anyone, knowing there is no reprisal. That's a lot different than it used to be when you passed your neighbor on the street everyday. :(

Re: replies to questions.

nevjb - We all loose a little without the feedback. I find that I learn a lot when it does come. It gives you a good feeling to get the thanks and it confirms what you had to offer. I learn perhaps the most when I reply to a post and I find out by reading other replies and the posters feedback that my input was not on target at all. Without the feedback you never know.

In any case I don't let it get to me. [We could start an interesting thread by asking what kind of posts tick us off] The only posts that I find anoying are the ones where a guy will describe a problem (like his motor is overheating) - - . It will be followed by four replies that suggest that he replace his water pump - - Then the guy will follow by asking if changing the timing will help and ask for details on how to do it. Say what ??????? I will pass those with a quick click of the mosue.

Re: replies to questions.

In the past couple of weeks that I've been a member, I've got some great information from a lot of good people. I think I've put a thanks in for most of my questions/posts, but not all of them yet - I'm afraid if I do that, I'll stop other people from posting their thoughts. The more peoples input, the better. I don't want to close any doors.

So, just incase someone wrote back to any of my posts and I didn't say thanks, THANKS! You guys are great! :)

Re: replies to questions.

Like Dhadley sez, "no news is good news". I also spend a lot of time solving problems over the fone. Years ago I told the old man I worked for 'I haven't heard back from so-and-so. I think I'll call him and see if he's fixed or not'. The old man sez "don't bother". "If it still ain't workin', he'll call back". I kinda think that's the way it is here. I, like everybody else, would like to see more feedback though.

c/6
Hooty

Re: replies to questions.

Hooty, you just reminded me of something I forgot to do..........Thank you, Dhadley, for taking the time to help me with my transom extension, which turned out to be the best 40.00 :D I ever spent, and the knowledge I've gained from following your posts, has doubled anything I ever thought I knew, and as you said about passing these tid bits along, I've been able to do that to a much smaller extent than you, but I feel good knowing I might be helping someone in the same situation I was in when I thought I already "knew it all", and in reality, found I didn't know squat. I thank you and those that have helped me, and I hope I can pass on the understanding I've gained in those areas.
Thank you! :)

Re: replies to questions.

I'm with most of you here, would like to know if my advice has helped someone, or if maybe we need to try harder. Or if I was wrong then maybe I could learn something from their feedback.

I think a lot of first time posters, may never come back to get the answer. Perhaps they got advice from somewhere else.

ted655, the only reason any of us are here, is to help if we can.

jsfinn, I too like to wait for more responses.
One thing I like to do, is acknowledge the help already received, then ask if there are any other opinions or perhaps an easier way. This also bumps my topic back up to the top so more people might read it.

Any one else have an opinion on this? see, I did it again. :p :p :p

Rosco,

Good point - keeping your post at the top of the list is a good way to get attention.

Re: replies to questions.

Thank you Kenny. I'm really glad youre happy with your project. When people ask about what kind of performance you get, tell 'em "about 30 smiles to the gallon".

I just put new pistons in my 60 degree 150. Sounds great so far! Did you ever find one?
