I have a 1991 270 Sundancer, SeaRay. Its currently equiped with twin 4.3 liter, Mercruisers rated at 175 h.p. each. The boat is much slower than I prefer and the engines are showing serious wear. I was thinking of replacingtitwith a smaller fishing rig but, after trying a few out I really was not as satisfied with the fishing rigs as I am the Sundancer. I would like to repower the Sundancer and need advice as to which Mercruiser engine would offer me more power, speed and economical operation than I am getting now. My local dealer is recommending the 5 liter, 220hp engine.Advicefrommore experienced boaters with much more engine expertise than me would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Re: Repower - 270 Sundancer

I'm not a Mercruiser expert but my philosophy is this: If you are going to go thru the trouble of converting to a V-8, why not go to the 5.7 liter (350 ci)? The 5 liter and the 5.7 liter are the same physical size and have the same accessory attach points. But the 5.7 will get you a minimum of 260 hp. Merc puts the Alpha drives behind 5.7 liters so they can handle it.

Only downside is a little bit worse gas mileage.

I think you might have problems fitting twin v-8s in that boat. The beam on the 91 270 sundancer is 9'. The standard engine was a single 7.4. The largest twin option was the v-6's you have now. You could go with the 205 hp version if you want more hp. The 80's version of the 270 had a 10' beam and would accomodate the twin v-8's.

If Twin 4.3ls Fit,
Twin 5.7ls Will Also Fit.......

They're the Same Width......
The 350s are just a little bit Longer......
