Re: Repower Mako 17 Merc 90 with 115
makome
I've owned 2 of the Merc 115's, an '02 & '03.
Below 1800 Rpm's they idle on 2 cylinders. I never had a problem with the other 2 cylinders cutting in during throttle-up but they are sometimes quirky going from cruising speed back down to idle. The transition can be rough and jerky for a few seconds because it takes a while for the gas to be used up in the 2 carbs that don't have idle jets. Both of my engines wouldn't idle smoothly unless the engine cowl was almost dead level. When you tilt the engine for transport (depending upon how much), the bottom two carbs purge. The gas/oil mix ended up in my transom well and stayed a greasy mess. I think they are a dependable, sturdy engine but I personally wouldn't buy another for the reasons mentioned.
