I'm currently in the middle of rebuilding a chevy 305, and my boat right now is a v-6 3.8liter. My question is (keep in mine money is not very abundant) whether or not I should upgrade my outdrive to a cobra, since I currently have an old stringer electric shift. Or would it be ok to simply go to a new intermediate gearing for v-8, and keep everything else the same? Any thoughts or things I should look out for would be greatly appreciated!

thanks,
Josh

Alpha 1 would be Plenty......
An Older Mod.1 would be Much Better than you have Now.......
Much Cheaper Too......

I don't know what a stringer electric shift is, what year? Is that OMC? As long as you know you can get everything to fit motorwise, with the 305 in place of the 3.8L V-6, you would need the correct merc transom assembly for the 305, which should be very common and easy to get. Check Ebay!!! And the drive would be alpha 1 as mentioned, either the old type 1 or the newer gen 1 or gen 2 Alpha 1's. The only difference with the gen 2's vs the older models I think is it has incorporated into the transom housing an oil line for the outdrive, so the gimbal housing that mates with the drive is slightly different. Make sure you figure that all out before you committ on an outdrive. It'd probably be cheaper to stick with the old type-1 drive or the gen 1 drive. After that, all you have to worry about is outdrive ratio and prop diameter/pitch and the nitty gritty like shift and throttle cables. I'm guessing you'd want around a 1.5:1 ratio, what would your hp difference be, from the 3.8L to the 305?
ps. why do you throw girls? Throw some my way :p

Thanks guys.

Ron - the difference is from 155 to 225 horse, and I throw girls, as I did cheerleading in college. I figured it was better to do that than to wrestle and throw guys around...
