Repower Suggestion ?

I currently have an '88 Johnson 110 VRO that runs great on my recently acquired 19' Lowe Center Console. I'm thinking that I'd like to repower this Johnson with either a later model 4 stroke or a 2 stroke EFI. I read in another post here that an '02 125 Merc was bought for $2800 which is in my price range :).

Looking for suggestion on HP and model replacement? I understand that I'll have to buy new controls.

Also what's a fair price to ask for my 110? Again I understand that condition is a factor but lets say it's in average to above average condition?

Re: Repower Suggestion ?

watching ebay and craiglist, the smaller motors are selling much better, than the large motors. if you want to sell it $900-1200. leave it on the boat until sold, that way the buyer gets the test run. will really help sell it. remember you have a good running motor, buying used you may wish you hadn't.

I agree. A good running and well maintained 1988 can be a much better motor than a 2002 that has been thrashed and abused.

Seems like a lot of HP for that boat. I see them with 90's. What is the max rating (out of curiosity). That thing should fly!
Personally, I wouldn't repower. (If it ain't broke, don't fix it).
If I did, I would prefer a 4 stroke unless the extra weight became an issue.

Being that this Lowe center console is an aluminum boat there's not much weight so could I get by with 60-70 hp motor or should I go to 90 hp?

Re: Repower Suggestion ?

Check the tag to see what the max hp rating is.
From there, it depends on how fast you wanna go.
Personally, a smaller motor would suit me.
I see a lot of bass boats with a lot of HP on the back.
I assume it's the trend which follows the pros, but for them, getting to a hole first translates into $$$.

The starting point is the horsepower limit on the boat's capacity plate. What does yours say? Typically, you'll want from 70% of that capacity as a minimum and 100% as a maximum.

I would lead you back to Tashasdaddy's statement. $2800 buys alot of fuel. A '88 Johnson 110 that runs good is a known quantity- they are pretty much as solid as it gets...

Buying a used outboard is an unknown quantity.....why take a chance??

Give your Johnson a facelift and run her 'til she dies.... :)
