hey guys

ok heres what i plan on doing i have a 16 foot boat and with a 1962 evinrude 33hp currently on it,i plan on replacing it with a 1993 48 hp evinrude.before i start i have a question about the streering.the new motor did not come with the steering system and using the system off the old motor wont work ( i think).question is can i use the steering system off a 1968 85 hp evinrude ?? will it work?? it hooks up to the motor differnt, but would it be a matter of changing the cable or just the end of it, and keeping the steering wheel or do i have to buy a whole new system for it to work? if you guys need pics i could get some.

thanxs jesse

ps is there any sites that i could visit that would help me do an engine swap project like this??

Pictures will help. It may be a bit tough for the guys to deal with 1962, 1993 and 1968 all on the same rig. You never know though. I am continually amazed with what some of the guys here can come up with.

I certainly understand the economics of wanting to retain the old cable system but from a safety standpoint you would be wise to convert the steering to the single cable style thats compatable with any of the newer motors. The more horsepower you bolt on the transom, the more important this becomes.

First I do not know what the '68 steering system is. That said, is the old steering a wire/pully wheel setup? If so, then attach the old wire system parts to the location where the steering arm attaches on the '93 motor.

Otherwise you can upgrade to a rotary helm/cable system with the '93. It will cost about $150 new or you can find them used on e-bay for a lot less. A steering link arm is needed, can be bought new for about $25.

This is the steering helm/cable system that works with the '93.

iboats Shopping Mall Link

There are parts for the original wire/pulley wheel setup available too. Modifying that system will probably be the most economical choice. A new Teleflex unit will give you a solid safe responsive steering system.

Edit:

You are also going to need a new prop to match the new motor/boat setup. I went with the Turning Point Hustler brand of props because I had to experiment with different pitch props to find out what worked with my setup. I started with a 13pitch and went to a 15 pitch. The props and standard hub are about $70, additional props are only about $40. I would suggest that you start with the 15pitch and go from there. You can use the prop that is not the perfect match as an emergency backup so it's not wasted.

Make sure your transom can handle it. You are nearly doubling the horsepower. That 33 was powerhead rated and probably closer to about 28 hp, at the prop.

The 48 is prop rated.

I almost forgot. In case you don't have a manual, the Evinrude manual lists your 48 hp Full Throttle Operating Range as 4500 to 5500 rpm. The 48hp models have a 4 amp non-regulated alternator, and the tach setting is 5. Most 40hp models are 12 amp Regulated with a setting of 6. So depending on which source for tach setting you look at you will see 5 or 6 but they don't specify which hp and alternator output. If it still has the factory installed power pack, the rpm limiter is set at 6100 rpm.

Have fun with the new motor and setup! Like DJ said it is really a bigger increase in actual hp than the numbers seem to indicate. Should be a nice kick-in-the-pants when you slam the throttle wide open!

Mark

You should be able to hook your cable steering directly to the arm on the front of the late-model 48hp. Check with your local marina for a fitting if your's doesn't bolt up.

I'd echo comments about the teleflex being safer, but I've seen dangerous installations with BOTH. The old cable steering can certainly be safe if done right. Just use your head, & make sure whatever you put in there without question solid.

If the motor flops to one side at full power, the ride gets a little exciting.

I vote for the new steering too. I spent years working with my 52 Tollycraft wood utility boat with wire and pulley steering. It was fun, but gosh, the modern systems are so much safer, and less maintenance. I did try pretty hard to keep everything 'period' on my Tollycraft, but looking back, the maintenance on the boat wasn't as much fun as using it.

fp
