"In the interest of upholding the high ethical standard of the House Democratic Caucus, I am writing to request your immediate resignation from the Ways and Means Committee," wrote House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi in the one-sentence correspondence.

The funniest thing I've read all day. :D

At this point in the investigation to say that he stole the money is merely an assumption.
The whole story is not played out as yet,

Here is some mudding of the waters.

A congressman under investigation for bribery was caught on videotape accepting $100,000 in $100 bills from an FBI informant whose conversations with the lawmaker also were recorded, according to a court document released Sunday. Agents later found the cash hidden in his freezer.

Jefferson, who represents New Orleans, has not been charged and denies any wrongdoing.

On the affidavit it said,

As for the $100,000, the government says Jefferson got the money in a leather briefcase last July 30 at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Arlington. The plan was for the lawmaker to use the cash to bribe a high-ranking Nigerian official — the name is blacked out in the court document — to ensure the success of a business deal in that country.

The plot thickens.

The justice dept. recieved and executed a valid search warrant, signed by a judge. The congress is standing on ceremony and tradition. The problem is that graft and corruption shouldn't be the tradition they should be standing on.

Some reports that I have read say that the feds have him on tape stating that he gave the money to the unnamed Nigerian offical. If that is a fact it looks as though he did steal the "cold hard cash" :)

Although unpresidented and as mentioned above a judge did issue a warrant, It is unclear why they had to search his office as it seems that they have plenty of proof already.

Yea, but crime doesn't care who it sleeps with. As an Abramoff spin off, it seems Hastert is now himself a target of bribery investigation. He was hollering so loud because he knew his ox was gonna get gored.

I am begining to believe that the electorate will do themselves a favor by always voting anti-incumbent regardless of party affilation.

its for all the crooks.
I wish there was a way for us sheeples to change the law, should be 2 term limits in a lifetime for house, congress, senate and presidency.
two terms in one lifetime and no retirement package.
no immunity clauses, get caught with you fingers in the till, and as a public servant, the sentance is automatically doubled.

Re: Reps to the rescue as the Dems tries to bury one of their own

A local city councilman is facing 5 years in prison for doing something very similar. The $$ were not nearly as much. Why should Mr. Jefferson be any different?? Oh, wait a minute, I can answer that... he's Black.

No one ever goes to Washington and comes home poorer. Good example is the guy from West Virginia who is under investigation. Some say his current net worth is over $1 million and he went to congress with little or nothing.
