The motor is a '78. It starts and idles good. The compression is 125 to 130 on all cylinders. It is mounted on a 17 foot Ray Craft. The engine seems to be bogging down at less than half the required rpm. The bow of the boat comes up at a high angle and stays there until I return to idle. I have changed the fuel pump and hose, rebuilt the carbs. I performed all the ignition troubleshooting from Clymers. The only thing I found was one coil was out of specs and I changed that. None of this helped. The engine fires on all cylinders with a spark tester and muffs. So I missed something and need to recheck some component. The motor will not develop full rpm. If anyone can suggest anything I would really appreciate it. If you need more info please ask. Thank You.

If the motor is running correctly.

The next thing is your set up / prop etc.

Do you have power trim ??

How high in relation to transom is cavitation plate ?

If you give some detail as to set up and prop size pitch etc.

Dhadley or another expert in setting them up may be able to get you on the right track.

Do a search for set up , won't plane out , etc.

Should be a wealth of knowledge and recommendations , that will be of help.

You need to get this corrected , or your lugging your motor.

Which can lead to serious problems.

You should be able to pull 5800 - 6000 rpm's with an average load.

Re: Request help with Evinrude 115 please...

I'm not really knowledgeable on setups but the first time I put the boat in the water after buying it the local bass club was there for an outing. When I came back in they looked at the setup and said that the motor was set perfectly, right prop. My trim went out while it was in storage over the summer but during the spring it was working and made no difference in the problem. I thought maybe the boat was heavy from a leak and water logging but the club said no that that would be evident from how the boat set in the water. I have since checked for leaks with none found. The Boat sat in the water for 3 days and not a drop in the bilge. My tach doesn't work but I would guess that at most under load I may be turning 3000 rpm and the motor is lugging at that speed trying to plane the boat. Assuming that the problem is mechanical, What could it be?

One more thing, I have checked the throttle linkage and it is free and moves full stroke. Could a power pack be failing under load but work in the muffs and in neutral.

Did you do a link & synch to make the carbs open together, and the timing plate advances properly to the correct amount at WOT? Joe Reeves has a really good method in the archives.

I think dreamchaser is correct.. The 4 high speed orifices are at the bottom of the float bowls, behind the 4 drain plugs, horizontally.

Because of their location, they catch all of the junk that settles including most of the gum from old fuel when the engine is not used for a while.

If you buy the BRP kits and follow the instructions in your service manual, you should be able to overcome the problem.

Sounds like the motor is trimmed out too much and you need to do a spark test under load.
