I have a 3.0 1987 omc cobra that gets water in the stern drive. Was reading alot about putting new seals in and not sure if I am going to do myself or not. I know that you need special tools but if you are mechanical and stay organized can it be done fairly easy. My worst fear is that I will get into it and things will start falling out. Anyone do there own in the garage? looking for suggestions. O'yes I do have a manual.

Re: reseal omc drive myself?

Dan...your place or mine? :)

My lower unit (1988 2.3 omc cobra) does the same thing. I bought the boat from a good friend who told me about the problem before I bought the boat. He said he got an estimate to repair the problem and it was pretty expensive so he just checks the oil after 3 or 4 days of boat use. It is usually slightly milky and he just changes it. Good question though and I will be curious to see what the experts say!

I've done my 3.0 cobra more than once. If u have a manuel & some patience u should be able to handle it. By the way, I've found that the seals that are more likely to fail {at least in my case} were the prop shaft seal & the water pump shaft seal.
