Re: resealing 1977 upper gear cases on omc
we have 2 drives that need to be resealed. one the fluid was milky and the other got maybe a cup of water out of it when removing the drain plug. are the upper gear cases hard to reseal or should be that be done by a mechanic? if so done by a mechanic does anyone know of a good reasonable priced mechanic around the milwaukee,wi area? thanks
I wouldnt necessarily say they are hard to reseal(so long as you dont have to replace the drive shaft seals), but you have to make sure you do a very thorough job with it. Buy the OEM service manual for it. Off the top of my head, here are the parts you will need:
**Service manual**
Upper seal kit
New impeller kit(might as well replace while your in there unless you know when it was done last and is in good condition)
Water pump drive shaft(only needed if yours is 20% or greater worn)
Permatex #3 aviation gasket sealer
Loctite 680
A few cans of carb cleaner and some brass wire brushes to clean off all the old gasket sealer.
Drive shaft retainer to housing shims(OMC p/n 313202-313206) These are the color coded shims. Basically replace with new what you take off.(Your drive may not even have any like mine, but impossible to know until you take it apart)
I did the reseal on my hydro-mech. upper a month or so ago(first timer) and while it was time consuming, no part of it was hard.
Let me know if you have any questions.
