What's the difference between Fiberglass Resin and Fiberglass Epoxy? What would be the application that would determine which to use?

Hi, Mick.

Polyester and Epoxy are both resins used with reinforcing fiberglass.

CaptMick,
Polyester resin is what most boats are made of, it is least expensive resin and the easiest to work with (room temp cure). If you are doing repairs you should use an epoxy, epoxy has good adhesive properties, where polyester barely will stick to itself when wet. Gel coats are polyester based and will have difficulty sticking to epoxy repairs. The reinforcement (glass) you use can be sized for polyester, epoxy or both make sure the reinforcement is compatible for the resin you choose (sizing has to do with how well the resin bonds to the fibers). Good luck.

If you use epoxy, you have to remember that polyester resin won't bond to it, so gelcoating over an epoxy may not work too well. Its a hard fast rule, epoxy bonds to poly, but poly does not bond to epoxy.

Here's another product to try. I saw it on the OLN channel, and it seemed to work great for them.

www.coolchem.com

Just ignore the code and you can get the info from the site.
