I was at Lowe's tonight and I was looking at their fiberglass stuff. Elmer's glue company has fiberglass resin. It's $ 36.00 a gallon. Would this be ok to use on my transom rebuild?

I've never been in Lowes...I don't know what Elmers has for resin...how long has it been sitting on the shelf...what is your transom made of....

Re: Resin Question

There are only a few companies that actually make resin and none of the businesses that sell it retail make it themselves. These retail companies may switch suppliers frequently looking for the best price. What this means is it can be difficult to know exactly what these companies actually sell.

The good part of this is that lowest cost resins don't typically have a good shelf life, so they need to upgrade the type of resin used so it will last long enough for the retail market. The resins used to make most of a new boat are typically the lowest cost ones, so what you buy at the store will normally be of higher quality than much of what is used in a new boat.

The biggest problem with some of the retail resins is gel time, some, like the Bondo brand, have a very short gel time and it can be difficult to use in warm weather.

Check the label to see if it has wax added to it, if it does, you need to apply the next layer while the first one is still tacky, if you don?t it will need to be sanded before you do.

If this is the original transom in this boat, then it?s a 99.9999% chance its polyester, there just aren?t that many boats made from epoxy.

The short answer is, yes it will work.

Re: Resin Question

Thanks for the replies. My boat is a 63 Dorsett runabout, 14'. I'm completely replacing the transom with CDX plywood. I'm using 3/4 " sandwiched together which will be 1/2 " thicker than the original.
