I needed a quick answer for this, that is why I didn't use my old thread. Yesterday I the first layer of resin and csm on my plywood. I ran out of time for the remaining layer, I didn't use wax. I am about to start the final layers and I would like to know whether or not I need to sand the first layer, or what i need to do to make sure it bonds, again not waxed. And is it ok to use a polyester resin jelly in between layers, not a lot, I just see a couple of low spots I'd like to level out before I get to the top layer.

Re: Resin Question

If you did it yesterday then it's fully cured. Wright or wrong and you wanted a fast answer.

I did the same and sanded it light with my 80grit angle grinder and then cleaned it well several times with acetone. When I then laid my second layer the first layer felt sticky again.

The resin itself is worth nothing without the glass, it's in fact very brittle so if I where you I would make some PB to fill the low spots or even better torn out small pieces of glass, wet them out before I lay them in place for the low spots, make sure all air is out and then I would start to lay my second layer when the low spot fixes was starting to cure.

I'm not an expert and this is only what I came up with when I saw your question. Someone with better knowledge will sure be able to tell you how to do it "the right way"

Re: Resin Question

Zymox is learning fast. This is good advice. Really best not to have to do it this way but... Sanding and prepping with acetone should let the next layer adhere ok. What are your temps? I'd recommend getting them as high as possible. Not sure where you're located but if you're in a cold climate you must be no lower than 50? and would really be good if you could get it to 65? or better for 4 hours.

Re: Resin Question

you can fill the low spots with thickend resin or csm.....no worries. i would.

if you are using unwaxed resin, and the ambient temps are below 90 deg, you have a few days to laminate the next layer with out sanding.

but i do advise acetone cleaning before lamination.

Re: Resin Question

I'm in Florida it was 83 yesterday and more of the same today. I never got to it yesterday, stuff seems to keep coming up.

Re: Resin Question

Yeah, with your temps you should be good to go. Fill the low spots and level it all up and let it all tack up again and wipe it down with acetone and lay your next layer.

Re: Resin Question

No acetone wash is needed, just lay the glass down, there is nothing on the surface but the tacky layer of air inhibited resin.

This assumes it wasn't outside and exposed to the sun or rain.

Re: Resin Question

For me it was always standard practice to scuff/sand if the resin had set overnight ( depending on temp sometimes even after a few hours if it were hard and non tacky ).

Just me though and its your boat. Do what you wish.

Re: Resin Question

I always washed to be sure, but I did not sand unless it had been over a week, and it was not sticky any more. I tried to schedule all my big layups so I could get them done in a weekend, and I never had to add more layers.

Re: Resin Question

I sanded a couple of high spots, patched those, sanded those about an hour later, and a good wipe down with acetone and the glass was tacky as hell, so I put the next layer over it and it seems to have bonded very well, no bubbles or anything.
