Here we go my fiberglass supply guy talked me into one layer of 2oz. CSM sealed with 1-2 coats of gel coat. He says fiberglass is not waterproof and gel coat makes it waterproof. All water will roll to bilge and out. Ok Guys: Thoughts, comments, tips and tricks, not to do's.

Fiberglass with the proper amount of resin is waterproof (unless it cracks) but the cosmetic is different. Gel-coat can be colored and give a nice smooth finish. 2 coats maybe a third would give a nice finish.

Polyerster resin is more than waterproof enough as long as it properly cures. Gelcoat has pigment and is more resistant to osmosis, however I hope your deck will not be submerged. Therefore resin is adiquate especially if you plan to cover with carpet. A good cover properly vented will also help termendously in the longevity of your deck and the rest of your interior.

Good stuff kmarine, Your referring to the glass mesh or the resin? It's been many years working with this stuff for me.
Is this the new thing now or is it an option?

The glass mesh is the cloth which is used for strength. Glass is spun like cotton candy and woven for strength. The resin is the liquid that fills in the air between the fibers making them rigid. Together they make up a fiberglass composate. In your case you wish to use resin to keep the water from saturating the plywood deck of your boat and protecting it from dry rot. You are floating a floor on top of the plywood directing the water into the bilge for the water to be ejected by the bilge pump. Any fiberglass cloth you need will be to strenthen the seams of the plywood deck. you will not be able to entirely encapsulate the deck because you cant get the resin under the deck without tearing it out.

um.....your supply guy is wrong.

2 oz and gell is not enough.....granted if the gell is thick enough it will last for a few years.....however 8 oz is recommended on decks.

this will require one layer (on top of your 2 layers of one oz csm) of a woven roving cloth......this is called a finishing veil.
it is a 6 oz knitted cloth that will drink up any excess resin from the csm, and is layed over top the csm.

it will only cost a few dollars more and give you a very smooth finish to gellcoat.

here is a link ot proper deck replacement as well as mekp ratios, and how to properly glass the deck.
it has been proven that resin infusing a deck is of no value to you, in fact, it weakens the bond between the substraight and the fiberglass......in this link you will read the correct way to glass a deck.

the link in my sig also has instructions and many pictures of the process.... just use the index. but the first 16 pages has most everything you need to know about fiberglassing form the top pros on the subject.

here is the link to installing the deck....

and the other link is in my sig....

cheers
